About the UNSC
The political sphere of the world has become increasingly more divided in the endless quest for power and control. In the midst of this, UN peacekeeping efforts have become significantly more challenging; achieving a general consensus around new peacekeeping missions has evolved into a much more complex affair. As a result of this, nation-states are forced to prioritise power over the livelihoods of human beings, creating a breeding ground for conflicts to emerge, and also leading to nations blocking UN peacekeeping efforts. An example of this can be seen during the Syrian Civil War, where Russia harnessed its “veto” power in the UN Security Council to block resolutions that aimed to mediate the war. To combat issues similar to this, the United Nations must develop a better understanding of why certain conflicts emerge. Alongside this, they must also formulate solutions that are flexible and that are able to weave around current geopolitical tensions.
