Preparing for committee

What to do between getting your allocation and walking into your first session.

  1. Learn the rules

Read the rules of procedure once, then keep them open during your first session. Most of committee is moderated caucuses, unmoderated caucuses and voting.

  2. Research your country

Find your country's government, its allies and what it has said at the UN on your agenda. Its past votes are the best guide to its position.

  3. Read the background guide

Your chairs explain the agenda, the questions a resolution should answer, and the sources they recommend. It is on your committee's page.

  4. Write your position paper

One page on your country's view and the solutions it would support. Send it to your chairs by the deadline.

  5. Prepare an opening speech

About a minute long, stating your country's position and what it wants from the committee.

Awards and judging

Fair judging, final decisions

Chairs recognise Best Delegate, High Commendation and Special Mention in every committee. These are the rules every chair and judge follows.

Impartial judges
Chairs and judges assess every delegate only on what they say, write and negotiate in committee. A delegate's school, country allocation or past results play no part.
One set of criteria
Every committee is judged on the same criteria, covering research, diplomacy, speeches and resolution writing.
Decisions are final
The decisions of the chairs and the Secretariat on awards, procedure and conduct are final. Results are not reviewed or changed after they are announced.
Conduct counts
The Secretariat can withhold an award for plagiarism, for a position paper that is not the delegate's own work, or for breaking the code of conduct.
