About the World Bank
Vulnerable economies face a plethora of challenges that hinder their ability to develop economically. These challenges are often very difficult for economies to overcome, mainly due to the fact that these challenges are deeply rooted in the very structure and nature that the economy is built upon. For example, numerous vulnerable economies are heavily dependent on primary commodities, such as agricultural goods, that face high price volatility. However, since the production in the economy is entirely geared towards these types of goods, it becomes very hard to diversify production in a manner that can be sustained. Additionally, widespread poverty in these economies leads to a vicious cycle, where low income and low savings lead to minimal investment and productivity, resulting in economic stagnation. With this, it can be seen that fostering economic growth and development in vulnerable economies isn’t as simple for these economies as simply “producing more,” but sometimes requires aid from external economies. In the World Bank, nations must find a way to effectively finance these vulnerable economies to stimulate economic growth and development.
